Apple Pie Fritters

Everyone has their favorite donut or pastry they like best. It is so funny; some people will step out of the box and try new things and then there are those who choose the same thing every time.

That's my husband who still chooses his favorite plain glazed donuts each time we go to the donut shop. I must say that I also enjoy the plain ones too, but my all time favorite donut is the Apple Fritters. They are so good, full of apple heaven.

It is well worth the effort it takes to make Apple Fritters. I like a lot of cinnamon in my apple fritters, so I add a good amount of cinnamon and apple pie spice to give them the flavor you get in a piece of apple pie.

Apple Pie Fritters
Recipe Adapted from: Southern Plate

    2 1/2 cups flour
    2 teaspoons baking powder
1-2 teaspoons McCormick's Apple Pie Spice
    1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cups sweet baking apples, chopped *
    2 large eggs, slightly beaten
    3/4-1 cup whole milk
    Vegetable Oil
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, apple pie spice, and brown sugar. Add the apple and stir well coating the apples completely. In a small bowl, combine the eggs and milk. Add to the apple mixture stirring well.

In a deep fryer or heavy bottom deep skillet, heat oil 2 1/2-3 inches deep to 375 degrees F. Drop heaping spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden on both sides, about 3-5 minutes depending on the size. Fry in smaller batches so they are not crowded. Remove from the hot oil using a slotted spoon and drain briefly on paper towels. Toss with powdered sugar or drizzle with powdered sugar glaze. Cool on a wire rack.

Note: This recipe can be adjusted to how much apple spice you like. If the dough is not as thin as you would like add milk a tablespoon at a time. Dough should be thick enough to spoon and thin enough to spread out in the hot oil.

*A note from a facebook page follower:  The only change I made was to precook the apples in the microwave. I used Granny Smiths but next time will use a sweeter apple.
