With apple season in full swing, I wanted to make a batch of applesauce.  But not just any applesauce.

An applesauce that is wholesome and delicious at the same time, made with only four ingredients, served in individual portion-control containers.

In the past, I have made applesauce with loads of sugar, but not this time.

When making applesauce, it's important to use a variety of apples. I like to use sweet and tart apples, too, to better balance flavor and texture.

The sweet apples will break down more, whereas the tart apples will not. I used a variety of apples, including Granny Smith and Gala, in this recipe.

I cooked the applesauce on the stove in a heavy-gauge Dutch oven.   If you don't have one, a crockpot will do.

The cooking time varies depending on several factors, including the type and number of apples used and the desired texture.

I sometimes peel the apples and sometimes just leave the peels on.  This time, I peeled the apples.

I added the chopped apples to the Dutch oven, poured the cream soda (or zero-sugar cream soda) over them, and added the cinnamon sticks.

I use sugar, but I like to use Swerve powdered sugar for a no-added sugar option!

If you are watching your sugar, the smoothness of Swerve powdered sugar adds a lovely sweetness that isn't too sweet.  Just right.

I started them on medium-high for 30 minutes, then turned the burner down to simmer and cooked them for a couple of hours, stirring and mashing them with a potato masher to achieve the desired sauce texture.

We like our applesauce chunky, but if you like it smooth, use an immersible blender or pour the applesauce into an upright blender and blend on high until you reach the texture you want.

I hope you get to make some individual-serve applesauce soon.  It is so much better than store-bought.  Enjoy!

TIPS AND TIDBITS FOR THE BEST HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

Apples.  For a perfect flavor and texture, choose your apples wisely.  The secret to a complex, balanced flavor is to combine both sweet and tart apple varieties.  Use a combination of sweet apples, such as Honeycrisp and Gala, with tart apples, such as Granny Smith or McIntosh.

Whole spices.  You can use ground cinnamon, but for a more robust flavor, I like to use whole spices, like cinnamon sticks.

Avoid overcooking.  Cook until the apples are tender and break apart easily.  You want some chunks in the mixture.

Desired texture.  For a chunky applesauce, mash the cooked apples with a potato masher.  For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender or a food processor.

For storage.  For short-term storage, allow the applesauce to cool completely, then place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Add sugar (or Swerve powdered sugar).  Stir until well mixed.  Cover with the lid and cook 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.

As the apples cook and begin to break up into chunks, use a potato masher to mash them into a chunky smooth texture.

  1. In description you have cream soda but in ingredient list you have club soda. This recipe looks so good. Like the idea of single serve. Pinned.
