These air fryer green tomatoes deliver a crunchy outside with a smooth, succulent inside. The perfect summer food you will ever devour.
Fried Green Tomatoes
The air fryer is the perfect way to cook fried green tomatoes. I like to call them healthified fried green tomatoes. To finish them off, you can sprinkle a generous drop of coarse salt, salty capers, or a few drops of hot sauce.
To make air fryer green tomatoes, start with medium size unripe tomatoes.
I prefer using light green tomatoes that are pale green and have a hint of pink coming through the skin. They are not quite so sour.
Don't make the mistake of choosing green heirloom tomatoes. Green heirloom tomatoes are fully ripe tomatoes, a different variety of tomatoes.
I love combining self-rising cornmeal and panko for the coating, and of course, don't forget to double dip to get the most delicious, crunchy outside, divine.
I also leave the seasoning for the green tomatoes to just what is in the self-rising flour. That way, the tomato is succulent and not mushy when frying.
But don't think they are bland. The generous sprinkle of coarse salt at the end elevates these fried green tomatoes to superb!

TIPS AND TIDBITS FOR THE BEST AIR FRYER FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
Green tomatoes. Select firm, unripe tomatoes. Choose green tomatoes that are firm to the touch. Cut the tomatoes into slices that are of similar thickness, around 1/4 inch. (Don't make the mistake of choosing green heirloom tomatoes. Green heirloom tomatoes are fully ripe tomatoes, a different variety of tomatoes.)
Before and after. Before coating the slices, thoroughly dry them with paper towels for the breading to stick better. Let the breaded tomato slices rest for a few minutes before air frying to allow the coating to adhere well.
Overcrowding. Arrange the tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, cooking in batches.
Enhance cripiness. Lightly spray both sides of the breaded tomatoes with a neutral cooking oil, such as canola, to enhance the crispiness. As soon as they come out of the air fryer, sprinkle generously with coarse salt.
Serving. These are best served immediately. Leftovers are still good and can be reheated in the air fryer for 5 minutes.
