Decadent German Chocolate Brownies

German Chocolate Brownies, a German sweet chocolate bar in the brownie layer topped with a gooey coconut pecan layer and frosted with a luscious chocolate frosting.  A decadent dessert for the holidays!


These German Chocolate Brownies start with a brownie mix.  Yes, they are rich, gooey, decadent, amazing, and they are made with a mix.

I have to say though the idea to make these came from a blogging friend of mine, Christy Jordon over at SouthernPlate.com

She made some Samoa Brownies using a brownie mix, Dulce De Leche and toasted coconut which gave me the idea to use some of the same ingredients for the German Chocolate Brownies.  


I am a huge fan of German chocolate anything.  Every year I try to create another recipe using this wonderfully sweet chocolate bar. 

If you want a German Chocolate dessert and you do not have time to make a German Chocolate Pound Cake, German Cake or German Chocolate Pie, try making these brownies.  They are absolutely fabulous.

German Chocolate Brownies

  • 1 (18 oz.) package brownie mix + ingredients for the brownies
  • 1 (4 oz.) package German chocolate bar
  • 1 cup sweetened coconut
  • 1 cup minced pecans
  • 1 (12 oz.) can Dulce De Leche
  • 3 tablespoons milk (more if needed)
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening (I use Crisco)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
In a microwave safe bowl, melt German Chocolate bar on high 1 1/2 minutes stirring every 30 seconds; set aside to cool.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray non-stick cooking spray in a 9x13 inch baking dish; set aside.

In a large bowl, prepared brownie mix according to package directions.  Stir in the melted German chocolate and mix until well blended, being sure not to over mix.  Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish.  Bake according to package directions.

Remove from oven and set aside to cool slightly.  While brownies are cooling prepare topping and frosting.

In a medium bowl, stir together coconut, pecans, and Dulce De Leche together.  The mixture will be thick.  Add enough milk about 3 tablespoons to make it a spreadable consistency.  Spoon over the brownies evenly to the edge; set aside and make the frosting.

Sift together powdered sugar and cocoa powder; set aside. In a bowl of electric mixer using the whisk attachment, on medium, cream together butter, shortening, and 1 cup of the powdered sugar mixture and beat until creamy smooth.

Add vanilla and half and half a tablespoon at a time with the remainder of the powdered sugar mixture. Add additional milk if needed to get the creamy texture for frosting the brownies.
