Growing up in North East Texas, my Mother knew several truck farmers that grew different kinds of peas in the summer.  During pea season, my sisters and I would gather in the living room with paper bags for the shells and big bowls for the peas and shell peas as we watched soap operas (yes, I use to watch soap operas (whisper) and while we sat with fans blowing on us. By the time a bushel or two were shelled, Mother would have the first pot of Lady Cream Peas (Sometimes called Zipper Cream Peas) already cooked and waiting for us to eat with some Hot Water Cornbread to go with them, and maybe a slice or two of homegrown tomatoes and onion. Creamy Skillet Corn , super simple to make with few ingredients and is a great side dish to take to any gathering using fresh corn cut off the cob that is creamy with surprising crispiness. Look at these beautiful ears of corn I got at Walmart for 15 cents an ear.  I am not surprised that they are running corn on special. Fresh corn is always ready around the first of July here in Texas.

Punch Bowl Cake is a recipe from the 1970s!  You can vary the ingredients, but starting off with a yellow cake is traditional! Every Thanksgiving, Christmas, or special occasion, you will probably see these on our table. The recipe came from my Mother. There are so many variations now. I have to say hands down, that the ham roll recipe that my mother handed down to me is still my favorite, and that is the one with just ham, cream cheese, and pickles.

Not knowing this yesterday, I made a Coconut Meringue Pie and an  Old Fashioned Butterscotch Pie to take to our Life Group Meeting this evening. How cool is that!

German Chocolate Cake , three layers of sweet, rich chocolate cake, creamy coconut pecan filling, and covered in a chocolate buttercream frosting. My all time favorite cake at Thanksgiving and Christmas is the classic German Chocolate Cake .

Cherry Nut Cake {Granny's Recipe}

Cherry Nut Cake , three layers of spice cake with a blanket of rich caramel filling adorned with candied cherries and walnuts scattered throughout each layer.  Family traditions during the holidays are what makes memories. My Mother would always make this  Cherry Nut Cake  around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Pineapple Chess Pie {Granny's Recipe}

Pineapple Chess Pie,   all the ingredients of a regular chess pie except for the addition of a small can of crush pineapple. When I think of some of the pies that my Mother would make during the holidays, I think of this wonderful Pineapple Chess Pie that is so rich and delicious.

7 Layered Salad, {Granny's Recipe}

A classic 70's dish, 7-Layer Salad can be made a day ahead, easy to carry to gatherings, lovely to look at when assembled in a glass bowl.  It is certainly a crowd pleaser.  The 7 Layered Salad has been around for a long time even though as a newlywed in the 70's, I thought that it was my Mother's original creation (smiles).

Granny's German Chocolate Pie Granny's German Chocolate Pie recipe is an old recipe passed down to me by my Mother.  My family looked forward to it every Thanksgiving and Christmas.   Do you have a couple of family members who devour a particular pie during the holidays?   At my Mother's house during the holidays, my husband and my sister would try to see who would get the last piece of her Coconut Meringue Pie .
