Southern Fresh Cherry Cake

Southern Fresh Cherry Cake, quick and easy deliciously moist cake, made with self rising flour a touch of cornmeal, buttermilk, eggs, and butter.  Serve it plain with a dollop of whip cream or as we did with a dusting of powdered sugar.   The cherries are so plentiful in the grocery stores right now and what better way to showcase them than to make a Southern Fresh Cherry Cake.   I actually had to buy a couple of bags of the cherries to have enough to make the cake.  My grandsons are huge fans of these little jewels.   Like most fruits, fresh cherries have the pros and cons.  Fresh Cherries do not have a lot of nutritional value, but they are high in water content and are super beneficial to eat in the summer to hydrate.

Southern Fried Green Tomato Stacks as Appetizers or Elegant Sides

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes, crispy on the outside tender and meaty on the inside, yielding a tangy sweet flavor like no other.  Serve them stacked as a delightful appetizer or an elegant side dish. It is time for Fried Green Tomatoes!  Summer is synonymous with Fried Green Tomatoes in my neck of the woods.   Right now we are in the middle of fresh garden vegetables appearing in Farmer's Markets and some local grocery stores.  I must say the first thing I check for in my local grocery is if they have any green tomatoes.  Last year they kept coming in the store until late September here in Texas.     I only buy a few green tomatoes at a time to make sure that they are nice and firm when I get ready to fry them. I like to pick out firm green tomatoes and some that are a little pink.   They are the ones that are just starting to show some ripeness, sweeter yet still tangy in taste too.   It is just a preference.

Do you like Homemade Peach Cobbler with a Double Crust?   How about Peach Ice Cream?  It gets even better, how about No Churn Peach Cobbler Ice Cream?    We are especially fond of a big scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream over a warm bowl of homemade peach cobbler.  This is how it goes, while the peach cobbler is baking, we are making a freezer of homemade vanilla ice cream, epic! Depending on how many are at our house when we make it, I will freeze any leftovers.  The same goes for the peach cobbler.  If it is just Jim and me, we always have peach cobbler leftover.

American Flag Pie with Homemade Pie Crust

American Flag Pie,  is made with a homemade pie crust that brings this pie to a rich balance of buttery flakiness as well as a luscious sweet-tart taste of homemade pie filling.    My Mother taught me long ago that a pie is only as good as the crust.  There is some high quality ready made pie crust in the stores today, but when I was growing up, that was not the case. I learned to make pie dough from my Mother and perfected it in my Home Economics class in high school. I recommend making a homemade pie crust if at all possible.  For the American Flag Pie recipe, I use one of my favorite pie crust recipes.

Kolache Biscuits

Kolach Biscuits, tender, sweet biscuit dough with a well in the center filled with blackberry or strawberry jam, blueberry or cherry pie filling,  or a mixture of sweetened cream cheese.   Kolache Biscuits are a cross between a sweet pastry that originated in Europe including eventually making its way to a little town in central Texas and the classic biscuit that is popular all over the south.

Challah French Toast Recipe

Challah French Toast Recipe, fluffy thick sliced Challah bread dipped in a creamy egg mixture until soaked through but not soggy then fried in sizzling butter.  Ideal to serve for brunch, weekend family breakfast, or like we do for weeknight dinner. French toast is one of those foods that remind me of my childhood when my Mother would make it on Saturday morning during the winter months.   The house would be so cold in the mornings.  We had open flame heaters in the living room and bathroom.  She would light the oven in the kitchen for heat too as she started the bacon cooking.    French toast is comfort food for breakfast that will warm you up fast.  Mother's french toast on cold Saturday mornings is still one of my favorite memories of her in the kitchen.

Perfectly Cooked Steak Bites

Steak Bites, bite-size pieces of tender sirloin steak marinated in avocado oil, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.  Perfect for an elegant main dish or as an appetizer for any family gathering.  I have the secret how to cook the steak bites perfectly! Sometimes I just want to cook outside the box.  When I think steak, I think grilled steak, baked potatoes, and a nice side salad.  Steak Bites are definitely outside the box. You might think outside the box means labor intensive, lots of ingredients, and expensive ingredients.  Not Steak Bites!

Magic Green Beans , baked in a casserole dish with all the sweet, savory and amazing flavors of the fancy green bean bundles that are so popular in fine dining restaurants and around the holidays without all the fuss!   Have you made the Green Bean Bundles?  These fancy little bundles are a lot of trouble to make, but for our fancy Christmas dinner, Prime Rib, Smashed Fingerling Potatoes, Green Salad, and hot buttered rolls, nothing is too much trouble. Green Bean Bundles just go with our fancy menu. The Green Bean Bundles are so easy to put together, but they are very time consuming when you need to make enough to serve a large crowd.   Who doesn't love the flavor of bacon wrapped around a bundle of green beans, and a combination of brown sugar, butter, salt, and Worchester sauce poured over them and baked to perfection?
